Volunteers Get Pre-schoolers P1 Ready

December 2019

When it comes to being school-ready, not every child has the same head start.

Through Home2School, a bridging programme in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) School of Humanities and Social Sciences, some 17 five- and six-year-olds got a little help closing the gap ahead of starting primary school.

From August to October 2019, volunteers met with young ones with little or no pre-school education to give their literacy and numeracy skills a boost.

Two student volunteers were assigned to each child and met them weekly at a public space near the child’s home. The materials were put together by a lecturer and students from NP’s Early Childhood Development and Education department, and each session could be taught at either beginner or intermediate level, depending on the child’s ability.

NP’s dedicated team members were among volunteers that we got a chance to thank during our annual Tribute to Volunteers, held at Golden Village VivoCity on 19 October 2019.

About 160 volunteers, Society staff and guests were treated to a private screening of fantasy film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but not before tucking into a sumptuous buffet brunch at the GV Max foyer and posing for wacky photos.

Ms Chan Jia Hui, a volunteer from JYC @ Children’s Society who shared her volunteering journey with attendees, said many do not realise that even informal interactions with children, like playing games, can make a difference. “We build a bond and rapport with them, allowing ourselves to be role models and people they can turn to in times of need.”

Thank you to all our volunteers for your hard work and dedication.
