Testing The Mettle of Our Children
As they flew from push-ups and box jumps to medicine ball slams and dumbbell squats, and then delivered burpees and rope slams, participants of The Mettle Challenge 2018 worked up a real sweat.
Held at Stadium Roar (Singapore Sports Hub) on 21 July, the Challenge saw over 200 of our child and youth beneficiaries attempt 15 to 20 repetitions of each exercise, and then complete the entire six-exercise circuit as many times as they could within 20 minutes.
The participants were cheered on by Guest-of-Honour Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth & Minister of Transport.
This is the second time that The Mettle Challenge, the Singapore Children’s Society’s annual charity fitness event, has been held. It is an initiative by RoundBox @ Children’s Society, one of our youth drop-in centres. Over $34,000 was raised for children in need through participation fees, event sponsorships and outright donations.
Thirteen-year-old Mahamid Alhakkudeen, a beneficiary at RoundBox @ Children’s Society, started training months ahead of the event. “I was very excited… I wanted to do something to give back to RoundBox because RoundBox has given me many opportunities,” he said.
This year, we also introduced The Mettle Challenge Junior Corner, a segment in which children between ages three and six, and seven and 12 gave a scaled-down version of the Challenge a go.
Ms Charmaine Francesca Tan, Assistant Director and Head of RoundBox @ Children’s Society, said: “The Mettle Challenge very much reflects the work RoundBox @ Children’s Society seeks to do, to provide a platform where youth and children in need are given opportunities to pursue their passions and become the best versions of themselves.
“Witnessing the community coming together in support of their efforts is not only empowering for our beneficiaries, but also illustrates the importance of the village in helping to raise a child.”
The next Mettle Challenge will held in July 2019. More information can be found at www.mettlechallenge.com.
