Storybook on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Launched
Author Mr Goh Eck Kheng reading 'Jun and the Octopus' to children from Student Care @ Children's Society.
A new storybook to help parents and educators broach the topic of preventing child sexual abuse has been launched.
Authored by Mr Goh Eck Kheng, illustrated by Ms Lim An-ling, and published by Singapore Children’s Society, ‘Jun and the Octopus’ follows the story of Jun, a boy who confronts his fears and finds the courage to tell his parents about a sexual abuse incident.
This storybook has a distinct Asian flavour, setting it apart from more Western-oriented books that deal with the subject matter of sexual abuse. It is hoped that the book will help kick start meaningful conversations about body safety skills.
“Parents in Singapore tend to shy away from informing their children about sexual abuse, because they do not know how to start talking about it. There are also few local resources that parents of young children can tap to teach this essential life skill,” said Ms Lin Xiaoling, Deputy Director of the Research and Advocacy Department.
"Stories are a powerful medium for children to learn about topics that are not easy to talk about. The setting of ‘Jun and the Octopus’ and its accompanying illustrations were carefully thought through. We hope that this book will benefit children beyond our shores."
During the 29 May launch at independent bookstore Woods in the Books, eight child beneficiaries from Student Care @ Children’s Society joined in a reading conducted by Mr Goh.
Singapore Children’s Society has been conducting KidzLive: I Can Protect Myself, a child sexual abuse prevention programme, since 2000. The programme is currently offered at pre-school centres and is aimed at imparting body safety skills to children aged 4 to 6.
