Singapore Children's Society Raises Over $300,000 at Walk for Our Children 2019

September 2019

Get walking: Speaker of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan-Jin and Singapore Children’s Society Chairman Mr Koh Choon Hui kick off Walk for Our Children 2019

More than 3,000 participants braved the sun and heat to be part of Walk for Our Children 2019, held at Palawan Green, Sentosa, on Sunday, 28 July 2019.

This year, the annual walkathon and carnival fundraising event was themed Happy Factory, inspired by the Society’s mission to bring relief and happiness to children in need.

Speaker of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, the Guest-of-Honour, flagged off the 2-kilometre walk.

The scenic Palawan beach provided an idyllic backdrop for the walk, and the cold cups of Milo at the finishing point were a welcomed respite.

Then it was time for some fun in the sun at the fundraising carnival, with food and games to please all. Attendees also got a chance to pick up anti-bullying tips and win prizes at the Society’s Bully-Free Programme booth.

Over $300,000 was raised at the event, including through the sale of carnival packs and carnival coupons, as well as outright donations and sponsorships. The proceeds will further Children’s Society’s mission to bring relief and happiness to children in need.

Thank you to our event presenter Capital C Corporation, and to Tote Board and Singapore Pools for their support.

Beach-Bonding with Sunbeam Friends Club

For 12-year-old Sri Maruthi, Walk for Our Children 2019 was much more than a day out – it was a chance to catch up with his friends from the Sunbeam Friends Club.

Since July last year, the beneficiary from Yishun Family Service @ Children’s Society has been part of the programme which aims to bring fun and joy to children in need through healthy, creative and constructive activities.

When he first joined, Maruthi was shy and reserved. Now, staff members say he interacts well with his peers, takes the initiative to help others during activities, and has taken on leadership roles to facilitate group activities. Through Sunbeam Friends Club, he has become more confident and outgoing, and made good friends.

At home, Maruthi, the third of seven siblings, is also a responsible and caring elder brother to his younger siblings.

“I am glad that I was able to attend the walk with my family and friends today, and have fun together at Sentosa,” he said.
