Recognising Our Steadfast Supporters

November 2016

Honoured presence: Children's Society Chairman Mr Koh Choon Hui (right) presents a token of appreciation to Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, Mr Ong Ye Kung (left), who was the Guest-of-Honour.

For the last 15 years, Mr Tay Chiew Teck has given a critical resource to children in need – his time.

The 39-year-old process innovation manager at Singapore Polytechnic and volunteer at Singapore Children’s Society Family Service Centre (Yishun) has helped build agame and storytelling programme at Sunbeam Friends Club aimed at teaching friendship and independence to its members.

He also leads the programme, overseeing the execution and management of activities.

“To lend a listening ear or provide some form of companionship or mentorship, even though it is just for a short span of a few hours, can have quite an impact on a child. If I am able to do that, I consider it quite fulfilling,” said Mr Tay.

For his dedication and 15 years of service, Children’s Society honoured Mr Tay with a Platinum Service Award at Singapore Children’s Society Awards Presentation 2016, held on 15 June at Pan Pacific Singapore.

Guest-of-Honour Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, presented Mr Tay with his award.

Fifty-one other volunteers and donors were also honoured at this year’s Awards.

They included donor Mr Alvin Yapp, who received the Platinum Award for raising $338,913 through Project Intan, a charity initiative he started in 2008. The Platinum Award is given to those who raise between $300,000 and $499,999, or donate between $150,000 and $349,999.

Mr Yapp, who is Head of Corporate Affairs at BusAds Pte Ltd, is also an ambassador for the 1000 Enterprises and 1000 Philanthropists for Children-in-Need fundraising programmes. The children, youth and families under the care of Children’s Society have been beneficiaries of Project Intan since 2014.

Donations to the Project Intan fund are used to support programmes that help build the children’s sense of self-worth and character. These programmes also aim to instil values and impart important life skills to the children which they may not have been exposed to.

Congratulations to all our award recipients and thank you to all volunteers and donors who are making a big difference to the lives of our beneficiaries.
