Ministerial Guidance for Youth Leaders

September 2019

When the nine youth leaders from JYC @ Children's Society were shaping their plans for how to best give back to the Jurong community as part of YouthGIG 2019, they had the guiding hand of the supportive and passionate Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong Spring, Mr Desmond Lee.

As someone who had spent years dealing with the community’s unique requirements, our Minister for Social and Family Development was well placed to point to what was needed, they decided, prompting them to write in and request a meeting.

Mr Lee happily took time out from his busy schedule and invited the team to his office at the Ministry of National Development on 25 June 2019.

For close to an hour, the youth leaders, aged 13 to 15, listened to his thoughts on the needs of the Jurong community.

“The discussion helped us consider other possibilities and approaches to our project, and plan it better,” said 13-year-old Anson Lim.

Overall, it was an eye-opening experience for the youth, and Minister Lee’s valuable input and suggestions will shape plans for YouthGIG 2019.

Look out for updates on what is in store for YouthGIG 2019 in our next issue.

What is JYC @ Children's Society?

JYC @ Children's Society is one of 12 service centres run by Singapore Children's Society. This community drop-in centre focuses on engaging children and youth meaningfully in order to develop their strengths, build their self-confidence, and keep them off the path to juvenile delinquency.

Children and youth are provided a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment, as well as socio-emotional education through the Developmental Assets Framework. We reach out to children aged 9 to 12 at DEN (Discover, Empower, Nurture) @ JYC and youth aged 13 to 18 at GIG (Gain, Inspire, Give) @ JYC.

By promoting positive development in children and youth, the Centre keeps them from gravitating towards risky behaviour.
