Greening Generations

June 2018

Over a year ago, our Student Care Centre (Henderson) sowed the idea of a 3G Garden, one that has now come into bloom. It was officially launched on 16 December by Ms Joan Pereira, Member of Parliament, Tanjong Pagar GRC..

3G stands for Growing, Garden and Generation, and is a three-generation collaborative project with Thong Kheng Seniors Activity Centre and the Bukit Merah View Zone B Residents’ Committee.

Work on the garden began on 25 October 2016 with a planting workshop by the National Parks Board. With their hard work, and some help from volunteers from the neighbourhood and the National University of Singapore, the 11m by 5m plot flourished, yielding pandan leaves, bananas and chillies, among other treats.

The project provided the Centre’s child beneficiaries a chance to learn about nature while connecting with their elderly collaborators.

It gives Nurul Insyirah, 10, something to look forward to. “It is fun… I like to plant the seeds in the soil and wait to see the green pop up through the soil.”
