Bringing Out the Philanthropist in Everyone
Philanthropy need not be the preserve of the wealthy. With a donation of just $1,000 a year to Singapore Children’s Society, anyone can do their bit in making a difference.
Through the 1000 Philanthropists (1000P) fund-raising initiative by Children’s Society on 20 May 2014, individuals from all walks of life can support its services and programmes.
The programme hopes to draw at least 1,000 individuals and raise $3 million each year. So far, more than 190 donors have joined this programme, donating about $440,000.
Mr Kurt Wee, Chairman of the Society’s Appeals Standing Committee, believes that many hands make light work: “You don’t have to give a multi-million dollar cheque. In your own way, you can be a philanthropist as well.”
Some of 1000P’s supporters may come from humble backgrounds, but what they have in common is that they all have generous hearts.
Take Mr Benjamin Yap, who decided to have a charity drive as part of his birthday celebration in April. He felt that a donation to the Society would go further than gifts for him.
“Getting presents for my birthday is no longer important to me. Helping others and knowing that I can make a difference in their lives is,” said the 31-year-old manager. He said he was humbled to be considered a philanthropist and added that he was glad to see smaller donors recognised by the Society.
Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, is the Patron of the programme.
A 1000P microsite (www.1000p.org.sg) has also been launched to keep the Society’s donors and potential donors up to date on the latest happenings, and to allow people to sign up for the programme online.
