A Celebration of Youth

September 2020

In July, the Society observed Youth Month and celebrated Youth Day 2020, which fell on 5 July. To mark the occasions, we brought our youth members from GIG @ JYC (JYC @ Children’s Society), RoundBox @ Children’s Society, The Fort @ Children’s Society, and VOX @ Children’s Society together virtually to share their strengths, and why they are proud of them.

The submissions were then put together and shared as part of a #CelebrateOurYouth social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram. The month-long campaign gave voice and a platform to our members.

Alicia Chia Wen Si, 16, said patience and understanding were her greatest strengths.

“I am always there to help my friends if they need me,” she says.

Resilience surfaced in several contributions, including those from Fabian Lim, 15, Adi Sufyan Bin Azman, 16, and Nafisah Begum D/O Lokman, 17.

“I try my best to overcome challenges no matter what situation I am in… I stay strong no matter what comes my way,” says Nafisah.

The campaign ended with a Facebook Live session streamed from VOX @ Children’s Society, during which the audience got a virtual tour of the youth drop-in centre. Following that, social worker Ms Hong Jing Ying and youth members Yeo Xin Yi and Qalishya Khanom hosted an interactive session during which they shared their experiences at the centre and at Children’s Society events, as well as their career aspirations.

Xin Yi had participated in the Singapore Children’s Society’s 65th Anniversary Conference three years earlier, and Qalishya was our youngest panellist at the Singapore Children’s Forum 2019 on inequality. Both hope to become social workers one day.

Social worker Jing Ying, who hosted the session, says she found it both enjoyable and meaningful, adding: “It gave me an opportunity to amplify our youths’ voices and promote the youth development work we have been doing.”
