It was a Filipino finish to the KidzFEST 2014 programme, with the 13 children from Children Service Centre making a virtual trip to the Pearl of the Orient Sea for the programme’s fourth run on 6 December 2014.
With the help of 12 volunteers from Cartus Corporation Pte Ltd, which included eight Filipinos, they were whisked through some of the Philippines’ top attractions, given a crash course on the country’s history, and even taught some basic Tagalog.
They tucked into Filipino fast food from Jollibee, topped with a sweet ending they got to make themselves, a fruit salad made with fruit, yoghurt and condensed milk, usually enjoyed during fiestas.
With Christmas around the corner, the 9- to 12-year-olds then got hands on with traditional Filipino customs, like decorating a paról, or star-shaped Christmas lantern, with crepe paper, markers and stickers. They then played the country’s version of the egg-and-spoon race, a relay game of passing a lime to team mates using spoons held in their mouths.
Thanks to the creative volunteers, a cardboard jeepney – a popular mode of public transportation in the Philippines – provided the backdrop for a perfect photo finish to the day.
Thank you to the Cartus Corporation team and all other volunteers who made this year’s KidzFEST possible!
