Celebrating Our Students’ Success

March 2015

The academic achievements of the students from Student Care Centre (Henderson) were recognised during the Centre’s annual Graduation Party, held at A*STAR’s Exploration Theatrette on 13 December 2014.

Four students graduated from the after-school care service, and received certificates. All four successfully completed their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) in 2014, and have moved on to secondary schools this year.

Among them was Sim Yi Ren, 12, who received the Best Academic Performance Award at primary six level. And as much as her friends at the Centre, she will miss the food, she quipped with a cheeky smile.

Some 100 children and their family members, as well as volunteers attended the ceremony, during which a number of other awards were also presented, including for Best Academic Improvement and Good Behaviour.

Nur Zulaikha, 10, won the Best Academic Performance award for the primary four level, and her mother, Mdm Narina, has big dreams for her. “I hope she will excel in her studies and her life, and give back to all the people in the Centre who have been helping her all this time,” she said.

The guests were entertained by performers from Youth Centre (Jurong), who aimed to inspire them to “step out of their comfort zones and try something different and new”, explained Ms Harveer Kaur, a counsellor from the Youth Centre.

And making a surprise festive stopover was none other than Santa Claus, toting a sack full of presents for the children, who could not contain their excitement (thank you to Mr Henk Deglint, Senior Manager, UBS Singapore, for arranging for this visit by Jolly Old St Nicholas!).

The afternoon ended with a rousing performance of Christmas songs by the staff of Student Care Centre (Henderson).

Congratulating all award recipients – and especially the graduates – Ms Amanda Zee, then-Acting Head of Student Care Centre (Henderson), said that she was proud of them, and hoped that what they had learnt at the Centre would prove useful in the years ahead.

Thank you to all volunteers, and to the staff from A*STAR who secured the venue and provided logistical support!
