Walking for Our Children in Need
Over 3,000 people laced up their sports shoes and headed to the Marina Bay area for the Singapore Children’s Society’s annual walkathon Walk for Our Children 2016 on 14 August, raising over $300,000 for children in need.
The annual fundraising event was flagged off by Guest-of-Honour Mr Ng Chee Meng, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport, who also completed the 3.5km walk.
Post-walk smiles: (from left to right) Children's Society's Chief Executive Officer Mr Alfred Tan, Appeals Standing Committee Chairman Mr Kurt Wee, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport Mr Ng Chee Meng, 1000 Enterprises for Children-in-Need ambassador Mr Ronald Liew, and Children's Society Chairman Mr Koh Choon Hui pose for a post-race picture.
Themed ‘Coming Together: Celebrating Harmony in Diversity’, the Walk aims to promote family bonding and the spirit of charity.
A carousel, a dunking machine, and carnival stalls selling food items kept the crowd entertained, while car enthusiasts got a chance to get up close to vintage vehicles that were on display, including VW Beetles and Vespas. The appearance of the Minions, Captain America, Superman, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman also created many selfie opportunities.
Eleven-year-old Mohamed Zaidan from Children's Society Student Care Centre (Henderson) completed the walk with his mother and elder brother.
“This is my third time participating in Walk for Our Children. I really enjoyed using coupons to buy food at the carnival,” he said.
Children’s Society Student Service Hub (Bukit Merah) also took the opportunity to put out its anti-bullying message. Participants at its ‘Bully-Free' stall learnt about ‘deleting’ cyberbullying through games and won prizes. They also received tips on dealing with cyberbullies, standing up for their peers and getting help.
This year’s proceeds were raised through the sale of carnival coupons, the sponsorship of carnival coupons for beneficiaries, pledge card donations, outright donations and corporate sponsorships.
Thank you to all who helped make Walk for Our Children 2016 a success, including our event partners, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Tote Board and Singapore Pools.
