Sharing Insights on Child Abuse and Neglect

From 29 to 31 August, our Research and Outreach Centre team participated in the 21st ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect, held in Calgary, Canada.

Our research officer Jerrine Khong presented her study on Singapore youth who have been victims of bullying to an audience of researchers and professionals from various countries. Our counsellor Ms Angel Kwok, meanwhile, presented her findings from our Compulsory Education Casework study, which helps families overcome their problems so that their children can attend school regularly.

We also put up a Singapore booth where our research monographs, newsletters and parenting guides were well-received. All the copies we brought had been snapped up by participants by the end of the first day.

The workshops and presentations, including insights shared by Sheldon Kennedy, a former professional Canadian ice hockey player who was sexually abused as a child, were thought-provoking, said Denise Liu, principal research officer at our Research and Outreach Centre.

“Our researchers, counsellors and public educators left the conference feeling inspired and even more committed to playing a part in preventing and addressing the issue of child abuse,” she added.
