14th Singapore Children's Society Lecture

14th Singapore Children's Society Lecture Transcript

Mrs Priscilla Lui delivered the 14th Singapore Children's Society Lecture on "A Shared Journey Safeguarding our Children" on 28 August 2021. Please click here to view her lecture transcript if you have missed the event.

As the number of child abuse and neglect cases continues to rise in Singapore, it has become apparent that the work of safeguarding children cannot be a solo effort by any one agency. Given that many such cases remain hidden, child protection has to be a responsibility shared by the community.

In the 14th Singapore Children’s Society Lecture, to be held on 28 August, Mrs Priscilla Lui, chairperson of the Hong Kong Committee on Children’s Rights, will shine a light on the need for a collective response in her talk, “A Shared Journey Safeguarding our Children.”

Mrs Lui, who has more than 30 years of experience in child protection and advocacy of children’s rights in Hong Kong, will examine how the needs of children can be made more visible in our actions and policies. She will also discuss how the community can be rallied and mobilised to play its part.

Mrs Lui is a former Director of Hong Kong’s Against Child Abuse (ACA), an organisation that specialises in child protection, and which hosted a study trip for our society’s staff and committee members in 1999. In fact, it was ACA’s child sexual abuse prevention programme that inspired the creation of KidzLive: I Can Protect Myself in 2000, a programme that Singapore Children’s Society continues to run today which empowers children in Singapore with body safety skills.

Mrs Lui, who has delivered keynote speeches at international conferences including the ISPCAN International Conference on Child Abuse, has also received multiple awards for her work. These include an Outstanding Services Award from the International Society of the Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect (2006), The Hong Kong Humanity Award from the Red Cross (2009), and the Hong Kong Paediatric Society Child Health Medal (2018).

She is a published author of two books – Listen to the Voice of the Wounded Children (2011) and the Child at Heart (2017), and has published articles in various journals.

In view of ongoing concerns around COVID-19, the 14th SCS Lecture will be held virtually this year. This two-hour event will start off with the lecture, followed by a Q&A session.

Anyone with an interest in the needs and welfare of children and young persons can participate. Registration is free.
