12th Singapore Children's Society Lecture Transcript
Associate Professor Teo You Yenn delivered the 12th Singapore Children's Society Lecture on "Growing up in an Unequal Society" on 15 September 2018. Please click here to view her lecture transcript if you have missed the event.
In the society, people refer to kids from low-income homes as individual “delinquents” or from “dysfunctional families.” There is a great deal of focus on “at risk” kids, on changing their “mindsets,” or “empowering” them. There is insufficient attention paid to the larger social conditions that shape their experiences of and options in society. Drawing from Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn’s book, This is What Inequality Looks Like, she will discuss key inequalities in areas of education and family life. It is this unequal context that we must pay attention to and aim interventions at.
