Nearly 45% of parents used physical discipline like spanking their kids in past year: Study

The article below covers the findings from a joint study conducted by Singapore Children’s Society and Yale-NUS College on the prevalence of physical discipline in Singapore, and the experiences of parents, caregivers and young adults. A media briefing on the research study was held with various media outlets. Apart from The Straits Times, the story has been similarly covered by Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian and TODAY.

One of our research officers, Ms Nabilah Mohammad, was interviewed by Berita Harian, in which she expressed hope that the study can increase awareness about physical discipline being ineffective, and also encourage parents to be more proactive in understanding children’s development, as well as other strategies to discipline children.
