As the needs of children and youth evolve, the programmes offered by Singapore Children’s Society have expanded to ensure that we continue to provide optimal care and support at every life stage.

Kaki Learn, a programme at Yishun Family Service @ Children’s Society, is among them. Launched in February 2022, it provides students with homework support and a conducive environment to learn and socialise in. It also involves parents and caregivers in activities so they remain fully engaged.

Learning in session: Young Scientist programme

The Kaki Learn programme includes several age-appropriate sub-programmes, such as phonics classes for four- to eight-year-olds, sponsored by Curious Tots Academy, Young Scientist, a multi-sensory science class, and KidsREAD, a reading programme led by community work staff and volunteers in collaboration with the National Library Board (NLB).

Kaki Learn also goes beyond the classroom, and includes activities such as inline skating, thanks to the involvement of community work staff, NUS volunteers, and other volunteers that include parents and caregivers.

There are currently 50 students enrolled in the programme, which is already producing results in terms of learning attitudes at school. One of the students, seven-year-old Jane* from Chong Fu Primary School won the school’s Aspiring Student Award (ASA).

“The children love the programme and find it informative and fun. We even note the birthdays of the children and of their parents and caregivers, so there are birthday parties every month,” says Ms Susan Quek, Assistant Programme Co-ordinator at Yishun Family Service.

“Thanks to feedback from parents and caregivers, the Kaki Learn programme only continues to evolve and become better,” she adds.
