In Singapore, the mental health of children and youth is worsening. Increased stressors on families (e.g. financial difficulties, domestic conflicts) can deprive children of a healthy and safe childhood. Adverse childhood experiences or traumatic experiences are becoming more common. Singapore Children’s Society identified mental health concerns amongst children and young persons as key challenges to their well-being. In response to that, we launched the Oasis for Minds Services (OMS). Our aim was to provide a seamless service from mental health promotion, accessible early intervention to recovery-focused services to enable our beneficiaries to develop positively and live in a safe and inclusive community. We would like to thank each and every one of our supporters who made Tee Up For Our Children, our charity golf event a success! We hope you had a tee-rific time on the green, knowing that your presence and generosity have made a difference in the lives of the beneficiaries we serve.

The President’s Challenge-Institute of Mental Health (PC-IMH) programme was launched in 2022 to serve those between the ages of 13 and 19 with mild to moderate mental health symptoms. It aims to bridge the gap between care from hospitals and care within the community for youth with mental health concerns.

Children’s Society is one of four social service agencies helping youth under this programme. From the recent pilot program, all 15 beneficiaries displayed anxiety symptoms, 4 in 10 have been exposed to potentially traumatic experiences while 4 in 10 are at risk of suicide or self-harm.

Through weekly or bi-weekly sessions with our social workers, most beneficiaries showed improvement and had better level of functioning in their daily lives after three months of the programme.

Treating mental health challenges is more than medication. It requires support on ground, especially from family members and close ones. As stressed by President Halimah Yacob at a recent visit to Singapore Children’s Society - “Services like this are really important as they involve the parents and family in order to, together, help the young person recover and have better mental health and be better able to take care of themselves.”
