Walk The Distance With Us

3 Sep 2020 - 30 Nov 2020

2020 has been a year of adversities due to COVID-19. Many have suffered from job insecurities.

Mr Thomas*, a sole breadwinner, is one of the many whose job was affected when COVID-19 hit as he was working in the tourism industry. Drawing a basic pay of $1,800 per month, he lost regular tipping from hotel guests and was asked to take two weeks of unpaid leave, resulting in a significant loss of income. Yet the bills continue to accumulate as Mr Thomas’ wife had recently undergone an operation for her kidney problems and they have two young children and one grandchild to care for.

Fortunately, they reached out to us and Yishun Family Service @ Children’s Society disbursed funds from our Casework Fund to provide immediate emergency relief while our social worker helped to refer the family to various financial assistance schemes. We also provided them with regular food rations and referred their children to receive aid via The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to ensure that they did not go hungry in school.

The donations we have raised during this difficult period have been a great support to our beneficiaries. However, more needs to be done as the effects of COVID-19 will be felt for much longer and families continue to be impacted.

With the cancellation of all our physical fundraising events, our signature event Walk for Our Children has been converted to our first-ever virtual event, bringing you fun and bonding time with your loved ones and friends in a virtual environment!
