Did you know that World Social Work Day is celebrated every year in March? In support of that, Yishun Family Service @ Children’s Society marked the event with a get-together for family and friends of staff to help them better understand the work they do.

Social work is an important and valuable profession that often goes unnoticed by the general public. It is not uncommon for it to be misunderstood as volunteer work rather than an actual career. Here is a fact – social workers put in long hours and great effort to help better the lives of the beneficiaries they support, with some going above and beyond the call of duty.

Over at Yishun Family Service @ Children’s Society, the evening get-together on 24 March kicked off with a sumptuous dinner of delicious food for guests and staff.

Spirits were high as everyone mingled and chatted with one another

Following the dinner, everyone adjourned to the conference room to hear from our guest speaker, Ms Joyz Tan, a senior social worker, talk about her book, Let’s Meet the Social Workers & the Children. Based on her personal experience, she shared anecdotes on what social workers do to assist children that face difficulties.

This was followed by a Q&A session, where guests were able to anonymously pose questions to our colleagues at the centre. Some of the topics covered included how social workers maintain a work-life balance, ensure their personal safety during visitations and what motivates them, among others.

Q&A session of “Can Ask Meh???” provided guests with plenty of insight into what our colleagues at Yishun Family Service do

Through this get-together, we hope that family members and friends of our staff have a better understanding of the responsibilities that our social workers hold, as well as the amount of hard work and effort that they put in for the community. Apart from showing appreciation to our social workers, a big shout-out also goes to their loved ones for being the unwavering pillar of strength behind them.

The joyful night ended with a group photo of our colleagues and their guests
