The residents at Sunbeam Place @ Children’s Society were treated to a fun and festive time as the Air Line Pilots’ Association Singapore (ALPA-S) surprised with a Chinese New Year Carnival on 2 March this year. Alongside our staff, family members and pilots of ALPA-S came together to turn the weekend into a celebratory occasion for the residents and everyone present.

The venue was transformed through games like bouncy castle, bean bag tossing and residents impersonating cowgirls and cowboys who shot targets to gather points. Prizes also awaited those who scored at these games.

Residents and staff were in for a treat when a magician said, “Kids, do not do this at home or without the permission of an adult”. An immersive pyrotechnic show followed, showcasing an interactive and fun way for our residents to learn about bubble and science.

Family members and friends of ALPA-S pilots manned various stations to engage residents, with designing cookies using coloured frosting as one of the activities.

Chinese New Year is never complete without the appearance of 财神爷 (Fortune God) and lion dancers. Apart from the good food, numerous games and great company, the team from ALPA-S also extended red packets to the residents to bring the day to a cheerful close.

We spoke to Captain Yang, ALPA-S Charity Chair, to find out more about the association’s contributions to Singapore Children’s Society.

Tell us more about ALPA-S

The Air Line Pilots’ Association Singapore (ALPA-S) is a professional association and registered trade union that represents pilots based in Singapore. We have a charity arm that has an education fund that supports four overseas organisations and two local organisations, including Sunbeam Place.

What motivated ALPA-S to sponsor and organise the Sunbeam Place Chinese New Year Carnival?

The children in Sunbeam Place may not have a warm or complete home to go to, and many of them would have stayed in Sunbeam Place during CNY, a festive season where most families celebrate reunion. Thus, we thought of organising a carnival to bring the festive CNY cheer and spirit of togetherness to them. This would also allow children of different races to experience the CNY celebrations and reunion lunch too.

What did the members of ALPA-S contribute?

The members of ALPA-S donated to sponsor the carnival which included a buffet lunch, game and cookie making booths, a magic show and a lion dance. Some of our members also joined me to volunteer to manage the game booths.

How long has ALPA-S been donating to Sunbeam Place and what made you choose to support Sunbeam Place?

ALPA-S has supported Sunbeam Place for over 18 years. Back then, Sunbeam Place started out as a convalescent home providing basic shelter, comfort and relief to malnourished children, which moved us to adopt it as one of our chosen charities.

Any significant contributions/collaborations ALPA-S has done with Singapore Children’s Society that you would like to share?

Singapore Children’s Society is the first organisation that we supported with more than one million donated cumulatively over the years. It is also the organisation that we have donated the most to. We feel a great sense of achievement as the money is raised by each individual member, who give what they can from their salary.
