“Parenting: Does one size fit all?” by Dr John Elliott

Ever since the harm done by poor parent-child attachments was studied in the UK in the 1950s and 1960s, there has been extensive research into parenting and its consequences. Unfortunately, little of this research has been conducted in Singapore or even in Asia. As a result, there has been a tendency to assume that research findings from Western societies are more universal than they perhaps really are, and to extrapolate these findings to Asian societies accordingly.

This lecture highlights the potential areas where there might be grounds to hesitate in accepting the standard textbook view of best practices in parenting. It will consider the extent to which this standard view should be regarded as universally desirable.
